Rosa María

I live in a small town on the outskirts of Antigua, one of the most beautiful cities in Guatemala.  One of the things I love most about teaching Spanish is being able to share stories of my country with others.  Equally, I love learning about the lives, culture and traditions of my students.  As a teacher, I use Spanish as a tool for us to share and build on our relationship.  Learning to speak in another language is much easier with a common purpose.

In addition to tutoring, I give my time and companionship to young girls and women who have disabilities and were abandoned, as well as children with physical and mental development disabilities. I also enjoy hiking, doing crafts and exchanging opinions with others.  I like reading about a variety of topics including medicine and nature, religion and customs and traditions of the Maya, Guatemala legends.

Welcome!

¡Hola!

Hello! I am Rosa María García. I am an online Spanish teacher. I am from Guatemala and I greet you from the ruins of San Jerónimo. These ruins were founded more or less in the 16th century. In my free time I like to visit ruins, churches and all the very beautiful places in our city. I like to do a little sport, I like to dance salsa, and I like to crochet or knit like grannies do. What do I like about Spanish? To teach Spanish? Well, I like to do readings, and have an oral exchange, about our cultures and our personal experiences. I hope that you decide to practice Spanish, because constant practice is what will help you to have fluency.

Teaching Style

I use different learning tools, but one of my favorites is Google Docs. This is a wonderful tool where the student and I can write on the document at the same time. It's like having a virtual classroom dashboard!  My lessons include conversation, pronunciation correction, reading, grammar and tasks according to the objectives of each student; This way the student can listen, progress in their understanding and fluency; In addition, with these steps you will have confidence to create, write and develop topics of interest to you. The success of every student is my goal.

Testimonials

Bruce – Retired IT Executive – SCORE Mentor

“Rosa Maria has been my tutor for the past three years.  I love to study Spanish and get tremendous satisfaction from being able to understand and communicate in Spanish.  It’s one thing to learn another language but it’s another to carry on a conversation in that language. Rosa Maria has helped me be comfortable speaking Spanish.  I love our tutoring sessions.”

Bob M., Retired Math Teacher

“I have been a faithful student of Rosa María Garcia for several years now. I try to never miss a single week. When I began, my Spanish was halting, stumbling. She has been very patient and very helpful. Now, when I go on vacation in a Spanish speaking country, I feel confident enough to strike up a conversation and chat with whomever I meet, and enjoy the experience. In addition, it makes me very happy to know that I have a good friend in a foreign country. It makes me feel more like a citizen of the world. I hope that you give it a try, too."

Sara H., Teacher

“I have been studying with Rosa Maria for a little over four years. During that period, I have not only found her to be a good teacher but a friend as well. Rosa Maria has all of the good qualities of a wonderful teacher. She is very patient and is well versed in Spanish grammar. Living in the States (Taos, New Mexico) as I do, I have been exposed to many different Spanish accents, including our local one. Rosa Maria has a very clear accent, one that could be understood in any of the many Latino countries. This is an important point as understanding the teacher is of paramount importance to Spanish learners at all levels.”

Tabby K., University Student

"I’ve been taking Spanish lessons for a year now and love it. My teacher is quite flexible with the times and I really enjoy conversations about cultural differences between Guatemala and Germany (where I’m from). We also practice grammatical concepts and my teacher is patient with me and explains all grammatical topics very well. The worksheets Rosa Maria designs for me help me review and practice what we talk about in class.”

Jack, Retired Marine

“Rosa María is very easy to understand and very patient. A lesson with Rosa is the highlight of my day.”
